DevonStone is the next generation of Hardscape products from EP Henry. It is a cast paving stone manufactured by state-of-the-art equipment at our new Wrightstown, NJ plant. DevonStone will have the same quality and innovative features contractors have long associated with the EP Henry name. Like natural flagged stone, DevonStone will be available in several colors and textured finishes in six modular sized stones ranging from 12" x 12" to 24" x 24". A unique circle kit with a "square off" feature producing a 10' x 10' square is part of the line enabling the contractor to easily add a touch of elegance to any job. One of the big advantages that DevonStone has over most natural stones is its uniform thickness (1 5/8" or 40mm) and the close tolerances of its length and width dimensions (± 1/8"). Because of their size and thickness the strength and durability of cast paving stones such as DevonStone are measured by flexural strength and not compressive strength. The unit used to measure flexural strength is a megapascals (1 MPa = 145 psi). The industry standard is 4.5 megapascals and independent lab tests on DevonStone have yielded results between 6.5 – 6.9 MPa. This means that the contractor using EP Henry's DevonStone is giving his customer the very best product available.

While the look is completely different from traditional pavers so is the manufacturing process. Unlike pavers which are made with a very dry mix design of raw materials (aggregates, sand and cement) and compressed under tremendous pressure, DevonStone is made from a similar mix design of materials but incorporates much more water. This "wet casting" process then uses vibrations to fill the mould and shape the product. The results are a surface finish that is very tight and smooth with riven texturing that looks exactly like natural stone. This process also enhances the color of the stone giving a natural and dramatic palette to the product line of blues, greens, browns and sandstones. The DevonStone will be palletized and wrapped according to size with approximately 100 square feet per pallet. This will give the contractor the flexibility to choose as many of each size as needed for the job. The small hard plastic nubs on the bottom of each stone are to help prevent rubbing and scuffing of the product during packaging and transportation. These nubs can either be removed or left on during installation.

The design possibilities with DevonStone offers the contractor new and exciting opportunities for Hardscape installations. Patios, walkways, pool decks and raised patios are all possible using the product. Concrete overlays and steps can be finished nicely with DevonStone. The look of the stones makes DevonStone a good choice for any job that requires a subtle, natural feel. In raised patio applications, the DevonStone can be used as the flatwork for the patio and extended over the retaining wall units to make the patio and walls flow together. The contractors will have the ability to aid their designs by mixing colors and installing one size or all six sizes in patterns of their choosing. DevonStone is not suitable for any type of vehicular application.

Installation of DevonStone for the most part is familiar turf to Hardscape contractors. Excavation depth, the use of geo textile fabric and the installation of a compacted modified stone base, including an over dig, is the same as paver installation. The base depth and over dig in all dimensions should remain 6 inches. If poor sub grade soils exist, it may be necessary to excavate deeper to insure a proper base and drainage for the DevonStone. Remember as with all flatwork to provide the proper pitch for drainage (1/4" per 1') when doing your base prep. DevonStone can be installed over two different setting beds, concrete sand (ASTM C33) or EP Henry's new ProPak SB. EP Henry's ProPak SB is a specially designed and blended product recommended for the setting bed used in DevonStone, slab and stone installations. A precise ratio of Type I Portland cement and ASTM C33 sand, ProPak SB will insure a solid setting bed every time while still having the flexibility needed to withstand freeze / thaw conditions and the permeability needed to insure proper drainage and polymeric sand performance. One bag of ProPak SB covers approximately 8 ft² @ 1" deep. Ideally DevonStone should be installed on a screeded 1" thick setting bed. The setting bed should not exceed 1 ½" in thickness. Place the DevonStone units on the setting bed and seat them by lightly tapping them with either a dead-blow hammer or rubber mallet. Many contractors may prefer to use a block of wood and a 2 pound sledge to seat the units. Do not use a plate compactor on DevonStone. If using concrete sand as a setting bed it is recommended that an edge restraint be used. Install Snap Edge's new Lo-Profile edge restraint system, designed specially for DevonStone, as you would for a paver installation. If using ProPak no edge restraint is needed. After all the stones have been installed, sweep the joints with Techni-Seal's HP Polymeric sand. Be certain to install the polymeric sand according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

The DevonStone Advantage: The Material Estimating and Installation Package: (all of the professional grade materials needed for DevonStone installation should be available at your Authorized EP Henry Dealer giving the contractor one-stop shopping)
• Mirafi 500x or 160N geo textile fabric
• EP Henry ProPak SB
• Techni-Seal HP Polymeric sand
• Snap Edge Lo-Profile Edge Restraint
• Techni-Seal cleaner and sealers

DevonStone because of its non-porous surface cleans easily. For stubborn stains, such as oil or leaf stains, or if significant efflorescence should occur, EP Henry recommends the use of Techni-Seal's Efflorescence Cleaner for Pavers and Slabs. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage and application instructions. Once the DevonStone has been cleaned with an acid based cleaner it must be sealed. As with pavers, acid based cleaners can etch the surface of the stone so a sealer must be applied to insure the long term wear and finish of the product. EP Henry's recommendations for sealers are Techni-Seal's Protective Sealant for Pavers and Slabs WL or EV.
