Recently, HC.com has featured a couple of unique ways to use EP Henry pavers and walls: you may recall the inspiring work done for the entrance way at the The Please Touch Museum (Philadelphia) and the green roof at the Global Headquarters of Colorcon in Harleysville, PA.

The Brick Doctor in Dover, DE, continues this trend with two special projects that they installed last year.  The first one, Compass Pointe, also in Dover, is the most impressive, and one of the largest undertakings the company has ever done.  This project is unique to Dover's growing community and essentially there were two Hardscaping installations: the roof top garden for the office building, and the 90 foot compass rose accent added to the parking lot. The work Brick Doctor's team accomplished is impeccable and explains why they are considered one of the best installers in the region.

The first phase and challenge was the roof top garden of the building. The building owner wanted a "backyard" on the roof, so the landscape architect decided right away that the Brick Doctors were the guys he needed to make it happen. Jason Goodnight, the Super Intendant, was charged with the managing the install.  "We had done pedestal system roofs to run off water drainage i the past, but had never done anything of this magnitude.  The biggest challenge was working on different pitches and elevation - there were a lot of dips and valleys and it was hard to level the surface.

The owner was also adamant that the roof top rubber remain intact so this provided a unique challenge as well - the rubber would be a major eye-sore when the install was completed. To overcome this obstacle, Jason came up with the idea to glue Terrace wall in Autumn blend to the front of the rubber membrane, making it look like split-face wall when actually the rubber wall was set behind the face. Jason and six team members were able to complete the project in a mere two weeks, using 4 x 8 Brickstone pavers in Autumn Blend and Coventry Wall with bull nose caps.

The next phase was the compass design.  Jason's team had experience with this type of project in the past, but again Jason used his creative thinking to make it really stand out. Instead of making the compass points the same shade of red,  Jason made the points split into two red color shades, resulting in a a 3-D effect when seen from above. Circle Old Towne Cobble pavers in Pewter blend with a Double Soldier Course Border were used to complete the design, about 2600 sq. ft. in size.  As a bonus, Jason was also able to convince the owner to add sidewalks around the building and parking lot, to give the project a more complete look.

Another unique job bid awarded to the Brick Doctor team last year was the I Tech Space Exploratory Park for children in Smyrna, DE. Because of the complex color scheme for a 55 foot butterfly design that was requested by the designer, Jason didn't hesitate to recommend EP Henry products.  The difficulty here was getting the circle pattern pavers to fit into the the  butterfly design layout and once again the Brick Doctor team rose to the challenge, with their exceptional attention to detail and dedication to the craft. Despite the difficult task, they were able to complete this "masterpiece" in only three days.

Jason hopes these types of projects will bring more business and recognition to the company.  "I think we opened up a whole new realm for functionality combined with beauty in with these two projects, especially with the office park."  He added that the owner of Compass Pointe was thrilled with the results and told him the roof top garden and compass rose design have actually become a roadside tourist attraction, with his restaurant and pub benefiting from all the traffic, thanks to the Brick Doctor!
